The NTUCB defends the NSUB!

PRESS RELEASE

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has received very credible reports from some of the members of the National Student Union of Belize (NSUB), that they are being targeted for leaving classes last week Thursday to engage in participatory democracy by attending our National Demonstration for Good Governance. The NTUCB condemns, in the highest possible manner, the actions of some individuals at the University of Belize. We do not seek to bring to disrepute our National University. We refuse to believe that the one institution who should be promoting freedom of thought and freedom of expression could be acting contrary to its own principles! Our demonstration, thou political in nature, was not aligned to any political party’s agenda, and has at its very core, the best interest of the future generation of Belizeans. Thus, we find the actions of the UB students more than befitting the call of the NTUCB! As adults and professionals we must ensure that we teach our children, and our youth, the high importance of getting involved in the political democratic process, inclusive of demanding specific changes from those in power. Our children and youth cannot be thought to be subservient in this day and age. As far as we are concerned the University is not a prison and students are free to leave provide they can find a way to make up for any academic loss during their absence. We therefore call the principals at the University to ensure its staff understand the premise of our concern. The NTUCB publicly applauds the efforts of these students who not only took it upon themselves to show solidarity with our movement but who clearly are in tune with the current situation which threatens their future! We will be monitoring the situation and plan to take any necessary action if the management of the University seeks to endorse these types of actions against its students.
