Statement by the National Students' Union of Belize on the death of Laddie Gillett

The NSUB has received information concerning the unjust and reckless killing of Laddie Gillett, a 14-year-old student, in Placencia village last night. Laddie, originally of a Chaa Creek address in the Cayo district of Belize, was allegedly murdered by a member of the Belize Police Department. While the full details of this incident remain unclear at this time, the NSUB understands he was enjoying the summer evening socialising with friends when he was fatally shot. All accounts on social media and otherwise seem to indicate that the young man was in no way a threat to himself or anyone else. Photos shared show he was wounded from the back.

We the members of NSUB share the sentiments of people across the length and breadth of the nation who are appalled and deeply displeased that this has occurred. The NSUB condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms possible. We call on the Belize Police Department to conduct a full and independent investigation into what actually transpired last night in Placencia. The NSUB also calls on the Department to hold all those involved fully responsible and prosecute the constable to the full extent of the law.

The NSUB expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Laddie Gillett as well as all those affected by this unfortunate and regrettable incident.
